Highlighted Project: Selman Ranch

Leading Organization: The Nature Conservancy
Project Completion Date: June 2006
Amount of Public Funding Awarded: $500,000
Source: LeRay McAllister Fund

Project Partners: Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, Division of Wildlife Resources, natural Resource Conservation Service, the Utah Association of Conservation Districts

Project Highlights:
Along with many other partners, The Nature Conservancy has worked with the Selmans, long-time cattle and sheep ranchers, to purchase a conservation easement on their 6,700-acre property. In addition to representing the area's historic, agricultural way of life, the ranch supports a large and significant population of the at-risk Columbian sharp-tailed grouse. This species has already lost 96 percent of its native habitat in Utah. Protection of prime breeding habitat, like Selman Ranch, will have a major impact on the bird's long-term survival.
